The holidays can be harder on your body than you realize

Why Waiting Until January To Get Healthy Can Put You Behind

Why Waiting Until January To Get Healthy Can Put You Behind

We all do it.

“I’ll get back on track after the holidays.”

It sounds reasonable. The holidays are busy, schedules get packed, and January feels like the perfect time for a fresh start.

But your body doesn’t pause just because the calendar gets busy.

The weeks between Halloween and New Year’s can bring more travel, less movement, disrupted sleep, added stress, heavier meals, and a schedule that seems to get fuller by the day.

Instead of waiting until January to start feeling better, what if you went into the holidays already taking care of yourself?

The holidays can be harder on your body than you realize

Think about what the next couple of months can include:

  • Long car rides and flights
  • Carrying luggage, gifts, groceries, and heavy dishes
  • Sleeping in different beds
  • Later nights and disrupted routines
  • More sitting and less regular movement
  • Changes in eating habits
  • A mental to-do list that never seems to end

None of those things may seem like a big deal by themselves.

But together, they can leave you feeling stiff, tired, tense, run down, and simply not like yourself.

And when life gets busy, taking care of yourself is often one of the first things to fall off the schedule.

Stress affects more than just your mood

Stress isn’t only something you feel mentally. Your body responds to it too.

During the body’s natural “fight-or-flight” stress response, your heart rate and breathing can increase and your muscles can tense. Ongoing stress can also interfere with sleep and leave you feeling worn down.

That doesn’t mean holiday stress is avoidable.

It means this may be one of the most important times of the year to be intentional about how you take care of yourself.

Don’t wait until January to start over

January gets a lot of attention for resolutions.

But you don’t have to spend November and December getting further away from the routines that help you feel your best just so you can “start over” on January 1.

Starting now might be as simple as:

  • Keeping your regular appointments
  • Moving your body each day
  • Protecting your sleep when you can
  • Making time to slow down and recover
  • Addressing those aches or areas of tension you’ve been ignoring
  • Getting back to a routine that helps you feel and move your best

Small decisions now can make it much easier to carry healthy habits through the holidays instead of rebuilding them from scratch later.

Small steps can make a big difference

You don’t need a complete lifestyle overhaul.

You just need to decide what your body needs right now and take the next step.

For some people, that might mean getting back on track with their regular chiropractic care. For others, it could mean spending some time in our RE Room, focusing on recovery, getting more consistent with movement, or finally learning more about one of the services they’ve been curious about.

That is exactly why we’re hosting Fall Back to Health on Tuesday, October 27.
